Dinner Meeting:
Thursday, May 15, 2008
Speaker: Sunshine

Sunshine, a longtime Rancho Palos Verdes resident involved in volunteer activities. We will be looking at the use, or non use, of volunteers by the cities on the Peninsula as a means of keeping costs down.

How well do the cities on the Peninsula use volunteers, who, by working for free, can bring down the cost of local government? Our speaker will be someone whose whole legal name is really Sunshine. A longtime resident of the Peninsula, she has been involved with designing, building, and maintaining trails in all four cities on the Peninsula. Twenty-five years of effort have been devoted to the Palos Verdes Loop Trail that travels through the jurisdictions of all four cities. She will discuss the use of volunteers by the City of Rancho Palos Verdes with that of Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, and Palos Verdes Estates.

Palos Verdes Peninsula Street Fair
Sat-Sun May 31-June 1, 2008

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Street Fair will be happening on Crossfield Drive near the Peninsula Center in Rolling Hills Estates, 90274, on the weekend of May 31 and June 1. This is a good opportunity for outreach. We are already signed up to have a booth there, and are looking for volunteers to man (and woman) our booth. Set up time will be 7:30 to 9:45 Saturday morning. The booth will be running from 10 AM to 6 PM on both Saturday and Sunday. We would like to have three people at the booth at all times. At six, Sunday night, the booth will come down. We will need some help for the set up and take down. Contact Jay Jones j1000@cox.net and let him know what day(s) and hours you would like to work; he'll get you set up.

Thursday, June 19, 2008
Speaker: John Kountz

John Kountz was in Afghanistan during the Soviet-Afghan War and will be showing us pictures he took while there, and talk about the situation, then and now.

"It will be of little avail to the people, that the laws are made by men of their own choice, if the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood; if they be repealed or revised before they are promulgated, or undergo such incessant changes that no man, who knows what the law is to-day, can guess what it will be to-morrow."

-- Alexander Hamilton and James Madison (Federalist No. 62, 1788)

Divid055.jpg (2828 bytes)

"The state – or to make the matter more concrete, the government – consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can't get, and to promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten that promise is worth nothing. The tenth time it is made good by looting A to satisfy B. In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is a sort of advance auction sale of stolen goods."

H. L. Mencken 1936
